VSP will now cover the Optomap, a new technology used to view the retina without inconvenient dilation drops. Only patients enrolled in CERTAIN "Signature" plans are covered starting July 1st, 2010. Please contact VSP prior to your appointment to see if you are eligible. The Optomap is a digital imaging device that uses scanning laser technology that provides eye doctors with a 270 degree view of the back of the eye. Currently the Optomap is the only retinal camera device which can encompass that much retina (only comparable to eye dilation with drops). Other camera systems only image a 30 degree view and certain pathologies can be missed such as retinal detachment and choroidal melanoma. Bowen Eye Care makes this exciting new technology available for all of our patients. At a cost of $36 you can forgo the dilation and not have to sacrifice care, plus get to see what the inside of your own eyes look like. Who knows, you might want to post it on your Facebook page!
